eCryptonite #004

The art is made from a 3 kg natural Septarian Nodule, sometimes called Dragons Egg, from Betsiboka, Madagascar.

This specific Dragon Egg NFT is introduced to celebrate the birth of another NFT-project called Crystal Punks. I am not involved in this project, but I like it so much that I purchased 2 punks and I'm having some interesting conversations with the artist behind it.

Maybe the punks were once born from such eggs?

Description

The model used is a so-called Septarian Egg, sometimes also called Dragon Egg. In reality, it is a Fossil nodule. Its origin is Betsiboka Region of Madagascar and it is from the Jurassic period around 160 million years ago.

The size is 2,9 kg and it measures 16,5 x 11 cm which is a solid size. What is extra cool with this specimen is that you will actually see 2 large fossiled embedded into the stone. If you open it you will see that it is filled with black calcite crystals inside.

It is typical of these eggs that you will see a beautiful pattern. The name Septarian comes from the Latin word “septem”, meaning seven. The name was given because the eggs seem to form/divide in patterns of seven.

How Septarian nodules were made

Periodic volcanic eruptions killed the smaller sea life which sank to the sea bed and started decomposing. The minerals in the shells and carcasses attracted seafloor sediments that accumulated around the carcasses and formed nodules or mud balls. When the ocean eventually receded, the mud balls dried out and began to shrink and crack into the beautiful patterns that you see inside.
